ทำหน้าที่ราชทัณฑ์ เป็นผู้มีอำนาจลงโทษมนุษย์เมื่อตายไปแล้ว พระหัตถ์ขวาถือขรรค์ พระหัตถ์ซ้ายถือกงจักรประทับบนหลังราชสีห์ ตราพระยมทรงสิงห์ เริ่มใช้มาแต่สมัยสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถแห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา กำหนดให้เป็นตราพระยายมราช และในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ได้มีการสร้างตราพระยมทรงสิงห์ด้วยทองคำใช้เป็นตราประจำตำแหน่งกรมพระนครบาล พระราชทานแก่เจ้าพระยายมราช ต่อมาใช้เป็นตราประจำตำแหน่งกรมพระนครบาล ซึ่งกรมราชทัณฑ์ (กรมนักโทษ) เป็นหน่วยงานในสังกัด และเมื่อพ.ศ. 2542 กรมราชทัณฑ์ได้แจ้งสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีประกาศใช้ตราพระยมทรงสิงห์ เป็นเครื่องหมายของกรมราชทัณฑ์ เป็นต้นมา
